Ring Battery Doorbell 2K vs Blink Battery Doorbell 2K+ for renters

For renters who want a video doorbell without touching the building’s wiring, and who need it to come off cleanly when the lease ends. Two battery models, compared on the things that matter in a rental.

Our pick

Ring Battery Doorbell 2K at $99.99 (as of Oct 12, ~9:21 AM CT) is our pick for most renters. It needs no hub, recharges over USB-C, and Ring lists a No-Drill Mount among its compatible accessories, which matters when you can’t put screws in the door frame.

Blink Battery Doorbell 2K+ with Sync Module Core at $79.99 (as of Oct 8, ~3:42 PM CT) is the pick if you want the lower price and would rather swap AA batteries than recharge. Plan on a Blink subscription to keep recordings with this bundle (details below).

No wiring means no landlord ask

Both doorbells run on battery, so you don’t need to open the existing doorbell, run new wire, or call the building’s electrician. If your unit already has a doorbell, both can connect to it, but you don’t have to. Some leases still restrict anything attached to the exterior door or frame, so read yours before you mount.

Mounting and move-out

This is where Ring pulls ahead for renters. Ring lists a No-Drill Mount for its battery doorbells, sold separately. Blink’s spec page lists drill bit sizes for the wall plate and anchors and doesn’t list a no-drill mount. If drilling is fine with your landlord, both mount the same way: a plate on the wall and the doorbell on the plate. If it isn’t, Ring is the simpler path.

Charging vs swapping batteries

Ring’s battery is built in. To charge it, you take the doorbell off its mount with the included tool and charge it over USB-C. Blink runs on three AA lithium cells that you replace, and Blink rates them at up to two years on default settings. That figure drops at the highest video setting and with heavy use.

The hub needs an outlet

Blink’s doorbell needs a Sync Module to work. The Sync Module Core in this bundle plugs into a wall outlet indoors and connects to your Wi-Fi. In a small apartment that’s easy. In a long hallway unit, make sure you have an outlet and good Wi-Fi reasonably close to the door. Ring connects to Wi-Fi directly with no hub.

Subscriptions with this bundle

Ring works without a plan for live view, alerts, and talking to whoever is at the door, but you need a Ring subscription to review recorded video. Blink’s Battery Doorbell 2K+ can store clips locally on some Sync Modules, but the Sync Module Core in this bundle doesn’t support local storage, so recordings need a Blink plan. Budget for a plan with either one.

Wi-Fi in apartment buildings

Ring asks for at least 10 Mbps upload for best performance. Blink connects to the Sync Module over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and asks for at least 2 Mbps upload. If your building’s internet is shared or slow, Blink is more forgiving.

FAQ

Do I need existing doorbell wiring for either one?
No. Both run on battery. Wiring is optional on both: it trickle-charges the Ring and serves as main power, with batteries as backup, on the Blink.
Can I take it with me when I move out?
Yes. Both mount on a plate. Take the doorbell and plate down, patch any screw holes if you drilled, and set it up again at the new place. Ring’s No-Drill Mount avoids holes altogether.
Does either one work without a subscription?
Ring gives you live view and alerts without a plan, but reviewing recordings requires a Ring subscription. With the Sync Module Core bundle, Blink recordings need a Blink plan, since Core doesn’t support local storage.
Why does the Blink need a Sync Module?
Blink says a Sync Module is required for the Battery Doorbell 2K+ to work. This bundle includes the Sync Module Core, so you don’t need to buy one separately.
